362 Numbering

[Following CONSER, use "Unformatted style" even if issue one is consulted. SLC follows this CONSER provision, since it creates less confusion with a holdings statement.]

Use indicator value "1" (Unformatted). with format "Began with (), or "Began in .

Examples:

When the print version began earlier than the electronic version, the 362 should refer to the print version. Probably this is because the holdings of the electronic version are likely to expand to include earlier issues as time goes on.

Sometimes that starting date and issue may be difficult to find. Note that if you have uncertainly about the earliest issues you can just enter a year or a year with a question mark. So, some examples might be:

362 1 $aBegan with Vol. 1, no. 1 (1986).
362 1 $aBegan in 1986.
362 1 $aBegan in 1986?
362 1 $aBegan with Vol. 7, no. 001 (2005); ceased with Vol. 9, no. 004 (2007).

Transcribe data as found (standard abbreviations may be used)

In the case of complicated numbering, use 515, e.g.:
362 1 $aBegan with Vol. 1 (1920); ceased with New ser. v. 50 (1971).
515 $aOriginal series ceased with v. 20 (1920); new series began with vol. 1 (1921).

5XX Notes

Translate notes in non English languages into English, although notes in for French items are in French for GLC. Since all GLC records are monographic, this will not cause a conflict.

515 Complicated numbering

In the case of complicated numbering, use 515 in conjunction with 362, e.g.:

362 1 $aBegan with Vol. 1 (1920); ceased with New ser. v. 50 (1971).
515 $aOriginal series ceased with v. 20 (1920); new series began with vol. 1 (1921).

After $w and "(DLC)", proper format includes either 2-spaces, or 3-spaces before LCCN entry starts depending on when LCCN was assigned.
Here is what we have in our Bibliographic Formats and Standards on this:

Post-2000 LCCN format:

1. Always input DLC enclosed within parentheses.
2. Input two leading blank spaces between the symbol (DLC) and the year information, if the LCCN has no prefix. If the LCCN has a two-character prefix, input no blank spaces between the prefix and the year numbers.
3. Input the four-digit year information.
4. Do not input a hyphen.
5. Input the six-digit number. Input leading zeros where necessary.

Pre-2001 LCCN format:

1. Always input DLC enclosed within parentheses.
2. Input three leading blank spaces between the symbol (DLC) and the year numbers if the LCCN has no prefix. If the LCCN has a prefix of fewer than three characters, leave the appropriate number of blank spaces following the prefix.
3. Input the two-digit year information.
4. Do not input a hyphen.
5. Input the six-digit number. Input leading zeros where necessary.
6. Do not input trailing blank following the number. (If trailing blank is input, the OCLC system removes it.)
