RDA/AACR2 Changes

RDA Changes from AACR2 in MARC Tag Order

J. McRee (Mac) Elrod

14 March 2014

[SLC choices for RDA practice in brackets]

LDR/18 = i

040 Add $b language code (e.g. eng, fre) and $erda

--040 $a$b$e$c$d$dorder of subfields

100/600/700 Personal name main, subject and added entries

RDA change: more frequent use of $c identifier such as occupation to create unique heading. Terms such as "Jr." included. Less use of $q expanding initials or supplying missing forenames; may be used to resolve a conflict.

All creatures (human, animal, fictitious, legendary) coded as persons. [For human, prefer dates if known); for animals, fictitious and legendary characters prefer qualifier to distinguish headings.]

Entry is under first author mentioned, regardless of number. Collections by different authors remain under title.

100/600/700$d Birth and death dates

LC RDA practice: Use hyphen before death date, hyphen after birth date, but no "b.", "d,"; "active" replaces AACR2 "fl." and RDA "flourished". The use of "active" is no longer limited to pre 20th century. Name may be qualified by occupation or profession if needed to distinguish, and date(s) not known.

00/110/700/710$e Relationship terms

RDA change: addition of $e relationship designators, e.g., $eauthor, or $4 code, e.g., $4aut. Commas precede $e; no punctuation before $4. (This affects bibliographic records, not authorities.) Not required according to LCPCCPS, except for illustrators of children's books.

RDA contains no directions for punctuation of relationship terms or codes. Best practice seems to have no punctuation added before $4code. comma following ending punctuation (usually period or hyphen), before $eterm.

[Prefer $e codes.]

See below for a list of relationship terms.

110/610/710 Corporate entry abbreviations

RDA change: spell out "Dept." (This was in AACR2 but not applied.) Remove $k uniform title for treaty entries. (This was an AACR2 change, but database walk* not done by LC.) Enter treaties under first country mentioned, or one country if between one country and a group of countries.

111/611/711 Conference main, subject, and added entries

RDA change: append term, e.g., "(Conference)", if name of conference does not say it is a meeting, e.g., a set of initials. Exclude year and number from 111$a if part of name on item. Frequency, e.g., "Annual", may be included. Not relator terms are in $j, not $e.

130/630/730 Uniform title main. subject, and added entries

RDA change: "$pO.T." and "$pN.T." removed from between "Bible" and $p name of the individual books. For the whole Old and New Testaments, spelled out. "Qur'an" replaces "Koran".

For 240 see Descriptive changes ...

700$a$t/740 Analytic entries

RDA adds $iContains (work), or $iContains (expression) before $a.

[This may confuse patrons, create split files, and sometimes affects indexing. Do not assign $i, and remove if present.]

Changes in choice of entry:

100 Personal author main entry

RDA change: entry under first author, regardless of number. Cf. 245/$c.

110 Corporate body main entry

RDA change: un AACR2 treaties between to countries or international bodies were entered under first nation or body; among three or more under title. In the original RDA, treaties were entered under the first country mentioned; a later (April 2014) RDA change has all treaties regardless of number signing, entered under uniform title based on the original title.

130 For treaties change see 110.
245 Title

Collections by more than one author entered under title. RDA allows cataloguer to provide a collective title if lacking from resource.

[SLC will assign collective title if lacking.]

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Descriptive changes are more numerous:

All creatures (human, animal, fictitious, legendary) coded as persons. [For human, prefer dates if known); for animals, fictitious and legendary characters prefer qualifier to distinguish headings.]

240 Uniform title after 1XX

RDA change: under AACR2 (25.9) one uses "Selections" as collective title for three or more various works by someone; under RDA one uses "Works. Selections". This comes into play with *two* or more works.

The order of the pieces for the uniform title "Short stories. Spanish. Selections" is explicitly described in AACR2 (25.11). In RDA there seems to be no similar explicit instruction. It might be "Short stories. Selections. Spanish". Under RDA, only one language is allowed in the $l of a uniform title--no dual languages with ampersand, no "Polyglot" for three or more languages.

In music uniform titles, "violoncello" becomes "cello".

2XX Description

RDA change: use square brackets only for information not found in the item, regardless of source within the item.

RDA change: "[sic]", or bracketed additional letters, no longer used after typos. Create 246 with corrected title spellings.

RDA change: no longer add defining word to ambiguous title, e.g., :$b[poems], :$b[proceedings].

RDA change: transcribe punctuation as found, e.g., "...", but add ISBD punctuation.

245 :$b Other title information

RDA change: other title information not a core element.

[SLC will include other title information, with the exception of serial variable subtitles.]

245$h [gmd]

RDA change: no longer used. See 336-338 below.

245 /$c Statement of responsibility

RDA change: may transcribe all authors, regardless of number, but may transcribe fewer followed by [and # others]. In the case of a compilation with collective or supplied title, transcribe statements of responsibilities after titles in 505. Transcribe affiliations, degrees, titles, "Jr.", "Rev.", "the late", etc.

[Transcribing of affiliations is optional; if transcribing affiliations etc. which contain commas, separate names using semicolons without preceding space (space semicolon space used only when the persons or bodies have different functions). Consider omitting affiliations to prevent confusion with responsible bodies.]

There is no required correlation between authors transcribed in 245, 500, 505, 508, or 511 and traced authors, i.e., one may have untraced authors in the description, and unjustified author added entries. There is no minimum number of authors which must be transcribed and traced.

[SLC will have no unjustified added entries; transcribe all joint authors to be traced, three as a minimum for each function, followed by [et # al.]; do not consider this option for less than 10 persons. Notes may also justify added entries, e.g. 508, 511.]

RDA change: a noun phrase *associated* with the author is included in $c, e.g., 245 10 $aBurr /$ca novel by Gore Vidal, but 245 10 $aBurr :$b a novel /$cGore Vidal.

250 Edition

RDA change: transcribe rather than abbreviate, e.g., 250 $aSecond edition. Only use abbreviations if in the item. This may result in the double periods after an abbreviation, e.g., "ed.."

[SLC will have no double periods.]

256 Digital file characteristics.

[Do not code. Cf. 300$b, 516. ]

257 Country of motion picture production.

[Do not code. Cf. 651 Place $v Drama; 655 Genre $z Place (contra LCGFT). ]

260 Imprint becomes repeating 264 with indicators.

RDA option: supply jurisdiction after city if lacking on item.

[Always provide jurisdiction spelled out in brackets if lacking in 264$a. Never transcribe a postal code, since they are not unique.]

For serials and integrating resources, 264 1st indicator 2 may be used for intermediate publisher(s), 3 for current publisher, as opposed to current publisher in 260 and past publisher(s) in 500.

264 0 $aPlace, Jurisdiction :$bProducer,$cy ear. or [Jurisdiction] if not on item.

[Use for degree granting institution of thesis.]

264 1 $aPlace, Jurisdiction:$bPublisher,$cyear. or [Jurisdiction] if not on item.

RDA change: do not use copyright year with "c"; estimate publication year if lacking, i.e., provide copyright year in brackets with no c or copyright sign. Copyright sign is used in 264 4.

[Use 264 1 for publisher of print version of e-book.]

264 2 $aPlace, Jurisdiction :$bDistributor,$cyear. or [Jurisdiction] if not on item.

[Use 264 2 for aggregator of e-books. (SLC does not create provider neutral records because of the marked differences created by aggregators for whom we catalogue in the versions they distribute.)] . 264 3 $aPlace, Jurisdiction :$bManufactuer,$cyear. or [Jurisdiction] if not on item.

[Use 264 3 for maker of equipment, e.g., Kobo or Kindle.]

264 4 $ccopyright year.

[Assign only if copyright year differs from publication year, even if publication year in brackets. Code 008/06 s and date one if the same year.]

RDA change: may transcribe all places of publication in repeating $a; transcribe full names of publishers.

ISBD/RDA change: bracket adjacent element in the same field, e.g., 264 $a[S.l.]:$b[s.n.],$c[2010?] if continuing ISBD inclusions as opposed to language of the catalogue phrases.

RDA substitutes phrases in the "language of the catalogue" for ISBD abbreviations, e.g., Publisher not identified.

[SLC continues ISBD abbreviations due to the various languages of the catalogue it supports, but avoid when possible by guessed place and date.]

*RDA directs that the copyright and phonogram signs be used, or be spelled out, rather than "c" or "p".

300 Collation

Abbreviations such as "p.", "v.", "ill." "col.", spelled out; cm, km, m without period considered symbols, not abbreviations; "hr", "in.", "min.", "rpm", "sec." still allowed. Follow cm with a period only if 490 follows immediately after.

New MARC fields 336-338.

[See below for SLC 336-338 list of terms.]

When multiple terms are required, one may have either repeating fields or repeating $a in one field; prefer repeating fields.

336 Content type

RDA offers three options for content terms: give all which apply, e.g., "text, still image" for an illustrated manifestation; all which are significant, e.g., "still image, text" for an art exhibition catalogue; or predominant only, e.g., either "text" or "still image", depending on which is a larger part of the manifestation.

[Use repeating 336 for multiple terms, each followed by the relevant $2 code.]

337 Media type

[SLC uses 337 $aelectronic$2isbdmedia, as opposed to computer $2rdamedia.] Export "computer$2rdamedia if requested.]

338 Carrier type

344 Sound characteristics (in MLA RDA best practices)

[SLC will not apply.]

345-346 Projection characteristics

[SLC will not assign.]

347 Digital file characteristics

[SLC will not assign; cf. 256.]

490$v Series numbering

RDA change: transcribe as found rather than abbreviate, e.g., $vvolume …, $vC (as opposed to 100 in 830)

502 Thesis note

There are new subfields:

502 $aThesis or Dissertation$b(Degree)$c--Institution.$dyear.

[SLC will use "$aThesis" or "Dissertation" even though lacking from most RDA examples. LC policy is to omit punctuation. PCC leaves it up to the library. SLC will give punctuation.]

[503 obsolete; see 518]

504 Bibliography and index note

RDA change may or may not be implemented: 500 $aIncludes index. and 504 $aBibliography: pages 100-109. replacing 504 $aIncludes bibliographic references (pages 100-109) and index.

508 Noncast credits

[Include all noncast credits, as opposed to 245/$c; cast credits in 511.]

518 Event information.

Used for place and time of events, e.g., performances, continuing education symposia, art exhibitions, conferences.

[Use for "Originally released as a motion picture {date}" in video records.]

588 Source of description

MARBI change: source of description if outside item.

[Use for source of description in all cases.]

600 Person as subject

RDA change: code all personal names, e.g., fictitious persons, God as 600.

630 see 130

700 Person as added entry

RDA change: *may* trace all authors as opposed to only 2nd and 3rd, but only first, translator of poetry, illustrator of children's material required.

[Transcribe and trace authors up to at least three if present, including first from each category if doing different things.]

710 Corporate added entry. see 110.

[Do not trace commercial publishers or motion picture production companies.]
