Note, too that s is used for the date code even when the date is given as a century or as a decade.

$c[191-]

When there is no date, use the composers birth and death dates if
supplied, and put q for questionable.

If a century or date range cannot be inferred, code as uuuu

047 Form of musical composition code

048 Number of musical instruments or voices code

050 Library of Congress classification number

If two $a, enter a second 050 2nd indicator 4, using class number
for 2nd $a, adding Cutter number and year. The first $a is for
series classed as collections, or bibliographies classed in Z.

Add imprint year if lacking, unless open entry.

055 Canadian classification number

If the number in 055 is from LCC tables, change to 050 2nd indicator
4, adding a period after $b. If number is from a companion
schedule, and the 1st indicator is 0 (meaning LAC has), the 2nd
indicator is 6 (meaning LAC assigned the number), with $2fcps or
$2kfmod.

If 055 is assigned originally, 2nd indicator is 8 with $2 code of
schedule, i.e., $2moys, $2kfmod, $2fcps (for FC and PS 8000).

Delete all 055s which duplicate class numbers in 050. The only 055s
in the record should be FC, KF, and PS8000, or another schedule
such as Moys, identified in $2.

090 Local call number

100/700 1 $aComposers

RDA change: 100 is first composer, regardless of number. But
note that a collection, as opposed to a joint composition, is
entered under title.

The CMC has its own catalogue. The cataloging is far from AACR2 and
incomplete, but it can be a big helpful.

There is also a biogrqaphical database of their composers that
includes birth and death dates and other info.

Standard instrumentations

There are certain fairly standard large groups, such as:

Orchestra (i.e. full orchestra with woodwinds, brass, percussion & strings)
(the listing below is a listing of parts, not numbers of players e.g., 1st
violin is 1 part, even though there maybe 10 people playing the 1st violins)

Woodwind section: 2 flutes, (possibly piccolo), 2 oboes (possibly cor
anglais [English horn]), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons.

Brass section: 4 French horns, 2 or 3 trumpets, 2 (or 3) trombones,
tuba

Percussion: varies a lot. Tympani, snare drum, gongs, tam tam, bass
drum, etc.

String section: 1st & 2nd violins, viola, violoncello & double bass
[also known as contra bass]

String orchestra (usually just the standard string section: 1st & 2nd
violins, viola, violoncello & double bass [contra bass])

Concert band (or simply "band") - woodwinds, brass and percussion.

Brass band: basically the brass and percussion sections with some
variations.

String quartet: 1st & 2nd violins, viola, violoncello

Piano quintet: piano & string quartet.

There are others, but these are most of the well-known ones. The
above groups can be referred to without listing the separate instruments.

With concertos, for example, you would just mention the solo instrument(s)
and orchestra-you would not list the instruments of the orchestra. It would
not even need a note if the description is incorporated in the title.

There are lots of ensembles that have don't have any standard make-up like
the one that brought this topic up: e.g., - "Variations and toccata for 10
instruments / Robert Turner". In this case, it's best to list the instrumentation.
